Gladiator: A masterpiece for the ages

Well, what can I say, this film is truly a masterpiece.

The film is about Maximus, a Roman General, who is a well-respected person in his empire with his plans for him to be the leader of the Emporer; however, due to circumstances, he is not able to be the next leader in line because he was eventually betrayed, sold as a slave and a few unfortunate events happen to him.

Where do I begin? The film offers an engaging plot from the first minute of the film. The minute you watch the first five minutes of the film, trust me, you will be hooked on it. It paints you a perfect picture of how the film you might think might turn out but there'll be some bumps along the roads which'll keep you off guard.

The two characters of Russel Crowe as Maximus and Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus were perfect characters for the film.

Maximus is a well-respected person and everyone is willing to do anything for him on the other hand, you have Commodus, who is trying to take Maximus' position after his late father, Marcus Aurelius, who was the Roman emperor before he died and wanted to give Maximus that position.

The two characters give a perfect contrast to each other and each of them has their respective goals for them to achieve. If you have watched Game of Thrones, in a way, there were some similarities to some of the characters in that show. Maximus had traits of Ned Stark - a person who is well-respected and Commodus reminded me of Joffrey, a young person who was the King and he was a young age who was power-hungry.

At first glance, I thought this film was about brotherhood and loyalty, and it's a story about a famous Roman General who is well-respected in his empire; however, you'll see elements of how things such as betrayal and redemption - something which Maximus had to go through because of Commodus being jealous of his late father giving Maximus the Roman Emporer position - which made him angry and made him do a few things which causes Maximus' life to turn for the worst.

Considering this film was released in 2000, visually, the film looks stunning, especially with how Rome looked, followed by how each battle scene and fighting scene were all well-choreographed. Not only visually, but the score which was done by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard, made the music match the atmosphere and the tone.

Gladiator can speak for itself - the number of awards it has achieved based on IMDB - managed to pick up awards of Best Picture, a few Academy Awards, awards for their storytelling and performance and managed to hit over $ 502.3 million in box office success.

The awards speak for themselves, the acting and the plot of the story make this film a true masterpiece.
