So I've done a top 5 poll on my Instagram @lewistalkinganime, and today I wanted to give an in-depth explanation of my results. I'll be adding some honourable mentions here too.
5: Violent Evergarden - Reality Check
If you have not watched it, the show is about a person who just got out of the war, and is currently working as an auto-memory doll - whose job is to send out letters to people who request her services.
At first, Violent Evergarden is a show I've always wanted to watch. And I am glad that I watched it. It's not like the so-called 'typical anime' which you would watch. It takes a difference in the storytelling element. For me, the storyline-telling element is what makes it enjoyable to watch. Each episode gives you an insight into what Violent was like in the war and how she's coping with herself post-war. She experiences the twists and turns of life, and how she's trying her best to cope with real life.
I would say it's my personal favourite because it's a different type of Anime I like to watch. Me, I am a fan of those Anime which have a lot of action - to name a few, series such as Tokyo Ghoul, Demon Slayer, and more.
4: Cyberpunk Edgerunners - Welcome To The Future.
Probably one of the best Anime in 2022 I would say. Where can I start with this? Well, the story is about David, who's only 17 years old, who is trying to survive in this futuristic city.
To be honest with you, when I first heard about this show, I heard it from my friends. When they said the word 'Cyberpunk', I thought they were talking about the game 'Cyberpunk 2077'. I wasn't paying that much attention to it, but I am glad that I watch it. The first episodes alone get you hooked on it straight away. The story drags you to the life of David Martinez - he goes through twists and turns along the way, and you get to see how he evolves as a person.
But I would say the standout for me is the characters. Whether they are the main characters or not, they have that certain personality trait. My character in the show is Rebecca - just imagine a super bad shit crazy girl, well, she is the one who will meet the criteria of that. Not only characters like her but characters such as Lucy, Maine are some of my personal favourites. Overall, they did a good job with each character.
Considering this came out almost a year ago, hats off to Studio Trigger.
3: Tokyo Ghoul - Innocent To Not So Innocent
Expect the unexpected. Expect some bumpy rides ahead. Long story short, you have Kanenki, a college student, who goes on a date. He's like your typical college student - but something happens... I mean, if you have seen it, you already know what I mean.
If I were to have a rank where I would judge an Anime show on its first episode, I would say this is up there. I mean, you have three seasons of this series - but the first episode alone has already got me hooked on this show the first time I watched it. Each episode offers something unique - no episode is left 'uncompleted'. Unless they are building up to something significant.
Still, to this day, I have the intro of Tokyo Ghoul stuck in my head. Music, characters, plot, this is the film for you.
Truly one of the great shows out there.
2: Terror in Resonance - First Connection
One of the first Anime series I've watched. The story involves a series of bombings which happen around the Tokyo area.
For me, the music is my standout in the show. The music has a dark and sinister vibe to it - which helps paints a picture of the storyline, which you can say has some 'dark moments' in the film. Each character has their upbringing which helps build that connection with the audience.
Suppose I were to tell you that bunch of bombings that are happening around the city, it might sound like a 'cliché' story to you. But then again, don't judge a book by its cover. The more episodes you watch, the more you want to learn more.
Just watch it. It offers you a different type of anime.
