We all have that film that made us love this certain genre or just made us start to watch more of it. Well, believe it or not, Perfect Blue was my first ever Anime film that I watched, and I’m glad that it was.
The director, Satoshi Kon, a name we all might be familiar with. He directed Millennium Actress, Paprika, and Tokyo Godfathers, films which are all good in their own right. But why is Perfect Blue my all-time favourite?
Well, let’s talk about the duality of the film. Perfect Blue is about an actor, Mima, who was a singer and recently made the transition to an actress. You get to see two sides of her in the film - one side wanting her to pursue an acting career, followed by the other side, aka ‘the demonic side’ telling her to come back to being a singer again. Just the twist and turns will keep you off of your feet. The storytelling element alone can make you always question what’s going to happen.
Cinematography and Music do a good job of keeping you off your feet. With the twist and turns of the storyline, I must say, even watching the film with your eyes close, you can feel the twists and turns of what’s going on. Cinematography, with every shot, you see, well, it obviously has a purpose, but the style of the editing and the music compliments the film.

Title: The Cinematography of Perfect Blue
Perfect Blue is that sort of film that you’ll either like it or not. But if you’re wanting to get a taste of a unique storytelling experience, this is the film for you. This film is the reason why I’m watching Anime - it develops a passion for me to watch and discover the World of Anime. It’s such a shame that Satoshi Kon died at a young age, but his other films are masterpieces in their own right.
Rating: 10/10 (It’s too good)
