(Spoiler alerts for those who've not watched the series)
It's a good way to end a quality series.
The film is about Violet discovering what the caption 'I love you' is all about. She goes through flashbacks to discover her feelings for the feelings she had with Major Gilbert.
The series is a solid series throughout - from the TV show to the special episode, the previous film and this film has delivered in terms of its consistency with its narrative and structure. It's been a joy watching each segment of the series with the films. The Violet Evergarden series, in my opinion, is separated due to its uniqueness and how it's different to any other animes out there. Personally speaking, the story of Violet Evergarden is what makes it a good series to watch. Watching Violet grow to be the woman she becomes and how the story is not a typical action-buster anime and how it feels like a slower-paced anime which makes it enjoyable to watch.
The narrative focuses on Violet remembering the feelings which she had for Major Gilbert. Violet. Major Gilbert has had a big part in Violet's life and she is still looking for Gilbert. Back in season one, there was a scene where Gilbert was supposedly killed and she was on a mission to try to find him. In the film itself, despite what has happened in the past, Violet's still trying her best to find Gilbert - this is where the emotional value was at its highest - Violet's upbringing was not easy and watching Violet as a character, it almost makes us feel sorry for Violet but at the same time want her to succeed in her quests.
The thing which credit needs to be due is how no matter the status quo of each character, they have a story to tell. Take the character Yuris for example, a young boy who is about to die at any moment, wants to write letters to his family. Another example is Daisy's Great Grandmother. Daisy gets to read letters from her every birthday. A thing which they have to tell is one thing; however, letters, are a powerful tool of communication. In the digital age, we live in, it's easy to send a simple message to a person. As showcased with letters in the film, it shows how a simple letter can make a person feel emotional - which I certainly give credit to the story of making something so simple yet so effective.
As normal, the visuals and the cinematography are always stunning as always. It's a constant theme in the series to have such over-the-top visuals which makes it a joy to watch and paired up with its quality storyline. Each shop has its purpose and the Violet Evergarden films almost remind me of the film Garden of Words by Makoto Shinkai. But then again, both films have their unique visuals shown in different ways.
Personally speaking, the series ended on a high. From the series to the films, Violet Evergarden has certainly been a joy to watch. Each segment you watch feels like an emotional journey and the characters in the film feel like they've got a story to tell. It's certainly been a joy to watch and to whoever has not watched it, give it a go. Give a break from your typical animes which are in demand now and give this ago.
Rating: 10/10 - a good way to end a series
