Day 19/31 - The Cat Returns: The Cat Whisperer

Director: Hiroyuki Morita

Year: 2002

Genre: Adventure

A film which I enjoyed and it's a film made by Studio Ghibli. It's another Studio Ghibli film which I enjoyed. And, you can say a film which cat lovers might like.

It all started when Haru saved a cat's life whilst crossing the road which made these bunch of cats see her as a God.

The narrative was told in a simple manner that everyone can understand, especially since I was an animal lover myself and used to own cats back when I was younger, it's just amusing to have cats adopting human-like personalities and it makes it an enjoyable watch for anyone. The film almost reminds it's one of those 'happily ever after' stories which makes it enjoyable for a younger audience, especially for children and even young adults. Young adults would've been exposed to films which had those fairytale stories and it's always a joy to watch.

Sometimes a film when it's too simple, and people like not to watch it, but sometimes a simple film with a clear concise storytelling method is something people like to watch. It's also a perfect film to take a break from your normal anime films or shows you watch on a day-to-day basis, such as films which make you emotionally drained from it, or just wanting something you can just enjoy whilst watching it.

The characters which were used were all enjoyable and had that added personality to them. Side characters or not, they all had a certain trait to them which makes it enjoyable to watch. It gives you a mixture of characters to enjoy. Haru; however, is just a simple and kind person and you can see her development throughout the film. It's a bit hard to pinpoint which characters were the best but all of them were good.

Fun fact, the director has worked on a few movies where he was not the director - he's worked on Akira, Kiki's Delivery Service, Perfect Blue, etc with a role where he was working as the in-between animator and the key animation. An impressive way to get experience from all of these directors for each of their respective movies.

In terms of Ghibli films, I would say it's one of my favourites but by top film from the studio has to be Spirited Away. It's certainly a gem from Ghibli itself, its simple storytelling methods make it a joy for adults and kids to watch - that's one of the things I like from a Ghibli film - everyone can watch it and it appeals to all audiences.
