Genre: Romance/Sci-Fi
So, this film has another film relating to it, where it's called To Every You I've Loved Before. It's not like your first or second film, it's more like if you watch this film you will get a different ending to the next film. I hope I explained that in an alright manner.
This is safe to say my first time watching it fully in a proper manner and I've not watched the second sequel to the film. I've seen it with friends but I did not watch it fully, thus, my thoughts might be different due to the order in which I'm watching this film. Meet Koyomi, a boy who stays with his father where people around him constantly move between universes due to his divorce from his parents. He then meets a girl, Shiori, and they fall in love - which causes further complications when both of their respective parents marry each other.
It's certainly an interesting concept where you can decide in which order you can watch a film and let the narrative structure decide what you think about the ending. I'm still trying to piece the story after watching it but I get the gist of it. I would describe it as 'complicated' but not to the point where you don't understand it.
It'll be interesting to see what my thoughts of the entire this certain segment of the film will be like after I watch the second part.
Based on watching this film, making mistakes and trying to fix them is one of the things I've picked up on - using the ability to manipulate time and being able to fix it is something that I found interesting in the film.
Seeing different perspectives of life with Koyomi, where there are different parts of life where you can see him as a kid, an adult and an old person, making mistakes in his past life and he wants to make it right. Such as scenes with Koyomi
There were strong elements of romance shown between Koyomi and Shiori, where you can see how you want them to live happily ever after. Followed by the elements of sci-fi with the ability to travel in time. Both of the genres combined made it a combination which is unique to watch.
But this unique narrative structure of having two films which are identical together and you as the user deciding the ending is certainly something new for me. Despite it being a new way to watch an anime film for me, I certainly see the potential for these types of films to come out in the future. It's something which users are not used to; however, it could be a new way for people to watch films in the future.
The narrative element of this film has made me interested to see how the story will turn out in the other film.
Giving it a rating was a tall order for me, but then again, this won't be the last time I'll be watching this film. I'd like to take the time to watch the other film to be able to get a proper understanding of the film and be able to give more of my thoughts. But then again, the story based on what I watch thus far has not made me disappointed.
Rating: 8/10
